What is Eid?

Learn how millions of Muslims celebrate Eid and find thoughtful gifts for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

A time for prayer, reflection, and charity. Eid is a Muslim holiday comprised of two celebrations, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Why are there two Eids?

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fast of Ramadan and is followed by the “bigger” Eid, Eid al-Adha, a celebration centered around communal prayer, charity and gift-giving. The two Eids are the only two holidays celebrated by the entire Muslim community. Determined by the Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar, both holidays fall on distinct days every year.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is a one-day celebration on the first day of Shawwal—the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Arabic for “Festival of breaking fast”, the smaller of the two Eids marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. During Ramadan, eligible Muslims restrain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset. This temporary deprivation is intended to provide perspective, foster gratitude and remind Muslims of their religious duties to those less fortunate. Fasting is a pillar of Islam and a time of introspection and prayer. After a month of strict devotion and self-control, Eid al-Fitr celebrates the breaking of the fast. During this time friends and family gather to pray, exchange gifts, give to charity and celebrate with special meals.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Arabic for “Feast of sacrifice”, Eid al-Adha is a three-day celebration two months after Eid al-Fitr. This important holiday represents the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son by order of Allah. In the end, stopped by God himself, the Prophet Ibrahim was given a ram to sacrifice in place of his son. One of Islam’s most important holidays, Eid al-Adha lasts three days and begins on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijja—the holy month of pilgrimage.
